Summertime & the Living is Easy Cooking Class – July 19, 2012

Boiled Shrimp with Remoulade Sauce

You cannot help but hum the music to these words “Summertime and the Living is Easy” from Porgy and Bess, which made its way back to a Broadway stage earlier this year.

One of the Antebelllum Homes of Charleston, South Carolina

Last month we visited Charleston and Savannah and while driving around Beaufort, South Carolina looking at the historic and beautiful antebellum homes, we listened to an interview with the star of the show Audra McDonald on NPR.

Catfish Row…renamed in the famous Porgy and Bess Broadway play…formerly Cabbage Row.

The next day we were in Charleston walking along Tradd Street marvelling at the homes of Catfish Row, made famous by the Broadway play.  Call it kismet or coincidence.  I call it inspiring, which I was after visiting this colorful region of our country.  If you ever have a chance to visit Charleston, go!   The restaurant scene is over the top with classic southern dishes played out in all new ways.  I want to go back and eat more meals!

Shrimp & Grits from the Hominy Grill, Charleston

Every coastal town had its shrimp boats, so of course, I had shrimp nearly every meal.  I was inspired at every turn with new ideas, which will be on the menu at our “Summertime & the Living is Easy” Cooking Class on Thursday, July 19, 6:00 – 9:00 at the Holy Nativity Community Hall in Westchester.

  • Classic Shrimp Boil with Corn and Potatoes
  • Cheese Grits
  • Remoulade Sauce
  • Lavender Lemonade (the kind you want to drink on the front porch swing!)
  • Lip Smackin Barbecued Ribs + More
