If you’re a fan of food festivals, don’t miss Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival, March 28 – April 12, 2015.   Every spring, Knott’s Berry Farm holds a Boysenberry Festival in honor of its roots as a boysenberry farm. You can enjoy a family outing during spring break AND taste some delicious food inspired by the boysenberry.

Why a Boysenberry Festival at Knott’s Berry Farm?

In the 1930s Walter Knott harvested the boysenberry, a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry, and named the new berry after its originator Rudolph Boysen. Today, all boysenberries in the world can trace their roots back to Knott’s Berry Farm. Executive Sous Chef Eubaldo Ramirez who has worked for Knott’s Berry Farm for 28 years, says that many of the boysenberries they cook with now are grown in Oregon and Chile. A boysenberry has a sour taste. While they look like a blackberry, they are not sweet, so the addition of sugar or a sweetener seems essential. The original roadside boysenberry stand where Knott’s once sold fresh boysenberries, will be recreated for the event and guests can purchase authentic boysenberry plants.

Knott’s Berry Farm always has adult beverages on hand. During the Boysenberry festival, you are invited to taste a myriad of fine wines and craft beers at the Wine and Craft Brew Garden, located inside of Ghost Town’s Wilderness Dance Hall, including you guessed it, Boysenberry wine.

Then there’s dessert – so many options to choose from. There’s the perennial favorite, boysenberry pie, a boysenberry chocolate and cream cheese mousse, a boysenberry cheesecake, the Fun Bun, which is a cinnamon bun coated in funnel cake batter, deep fried and topped with boysenberry cream cheese.  Don’t count the calories on this one! There’s also deep fried boysenberry ice cream, boysenberry dessert flautas, a boysenberry trifle or theme park favorite, boysenberry cotton candy.  My favorite was the boysenberry sorbet bar dipped in chocolate in front of your eyes.  It showcases the fresh berry flavor.

Knott’s Boysenberry Festival is packed into 16 days March 28 – April 16, 2015.  During the Festival, the park is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to allow you maximum time to enjoy all the boysenberry treats and entertainment.
