We all know the saying “As American As Apple Pie”. Pies are a part of Americana and our heritage. Somehow the saying “Easy as Pie” is lost on our generation. It doesn’t seem so easy. That’s why I offer my Pies and Tarts Cooking Class every year just before Thanksgiving. Join us on Wednesday, November 4, 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club in Marina del Rey and learn how pie making can be made easier for you. Enjoy an old-fashioned pie baking social and meet new friends. I will be serving up a savory Chicken Pot Pie for dinner while you make your very own pie and learn all the pie secrets. So come hungry.
I’ve found some interesting new recipes including a pie from one of my favorite books, American Pie written by Pascale Le Draoulec as she drove cross country meeting pie bakers along the way. We’ll make Doris Kemps’ Accidental Apple-Blueberry Pie from Mammy’s Cupboard in Natchez, Mississippi along with four more pies. In this class you will also learn how to make a Foolproof Pie Crust and fill it with a filling of your choice. You will get to take your pie home and serve it to friends and family. In the past, some students have even frozen their pie and brought it out in time for a Thanksgiving feast.
This year we have some interesting twists on some old favorites. Here they are:
- Doris Kemps’ Apple-Blueberry Pie
- Chocolate-Almond Pie
- Walnut Raisin Pie
- Lemon Chiffon Pie with Glazed Cranberries
- Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie with Cornmeal Crust
- + Chicken Pot Pie for dinner
