My new evening splurge is a daiquiri cocktail, but not just any daiquiri…I’m talking about a Passion Fruit Daiquiri or a Kiwano Horned Melon Daiquiri. The combination of sweet and sour accented by the punch of some good quality rum makes me feel like I should be wearing a Mary Quant dress with heels and sinking into the couch of a sunken living room.  Serve this with some delicious appetizers.  Maybe some Deviled Eggs or my Hatch Chile and Artichoke Dip with some salty tortilla chips.  You get the picture!  A cocktail perfect for entertaining, but just as nice to enjoy on the couch with someone you love!

BRING OUT THE FREAKY FRUITS FOR HALLOWEEN!

I was inspired to make this cocktail by some “freaky fruits” that Melissa’s Produce and a friend who has a passion fruit vine had given me.  After learning how to ripen a passion fruit, I am ready to shake and stir some cocktails.

Ripening Passion Fruits on FreshFoodinaFlash.com
Ripened Passion Fruits are wrinkly.

I learned how to ripen passion fruits a few years ago as a result of purchasing some fresh passion fruits from a grove in Tahiti.  On this magical trip (see pictures here), about 15 of us left our anchored sailboats on the coast of Raiatea for a day to dinghy up the river to a private family hillside home.  Our tour guide, James, the young man who lived there, was very engaging and used some impressive sales techniques to gather our group together from three separate sailboats.  At the end of his tour, we purchased a large bag of passion fruits from him.  Throughout our trip, we found fruit stands along the road selling yummy fresh mangoes, papayas and lettuce on all the French Polynesian islands.  This was how you obtained the local produce of the islands – not at the local grocery store.

The Passion Fruit Daiquiri I attempted in Tahiti.
At the sacred Taputapuātea Marae complex on Raiatea Island, a political, ceremonial and funerary centre that dates back 1000 years.

I was excited to make Passion Fruit Cocktails for everyone on board our sailboat, had I only known that passion fruits must be ripened until they are shriveled looking and ready to throw out – that’s when they turn sweet, which was about the time it was for us to go home.  I enjoyed a nice sour cocktail anyway!! …and we threw some of our passion fruits into the ocean as an offering to the gods as we sailed by the sacred Marae Taputapuatea on Raiatea where the Maoris set off to discover New Zealand nearly 1000 years ago.

How to Make a Passion Fruit Daiquiri

So now that you know a little about Tahitian history and how to ripen a passion fruit, you can learn the secret to a great Passion Fruit Daiquiri.  You get a surprise when you slice open the passion fruit,   While the seeds are edible, you can either keep them in your cocktail or strain them out, as I did with a cocktail shaker.

Kiwano Horned Melon – another freaky fruit – perfect for a Kiwano Melon Daiquiri!

Now if you don’t have a passion fruit, don’t let that stop you.  I strained the juice from the seeds of a Kiwano Horned Melon in place of the passion fruit.  But why stop there?  I see a Watermelon Daiquiri or a Pomegranate Daiquiri in my future!

Passion Fruit Daiquiri

Passion Fruits are more available than they used to be. I was surprised that a friend is growing them here in their Southern California yard. Make sure the passion fruit is ripe, as in wrinkly and looking like you should throw it out...that's when it become sweet.
No Passion Fruits? Don't let that stop you from making this delicious Fruit Daiquiri. I've made this with a Kiwano Horned Melon and am about to try watermelon and pomegranate in place of the passion fruit
